Riverton is a city in Fremont County, Iowa, United States, along the East Nishnabotna River. The population was 304 at the 2000 census. The 1881 robbery of the Sexton Bank at Riverton was suspected to be the work of Jesse James, but it was soon determined to be the work of the outlaw Poke Wells.[1]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 304 people, 125 households, and 76 families residing in the city. The population density was 508.1 people per square mile (195.6/km²). There were 144 housing units at an average density of 240.7 per square mile (92.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.68% White, 0.33% Asian, and 0.99% from two or more races.
There were 125 households out of which 26.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.6% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.4% were non-families. 33.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the city the population was spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 114.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,500, and the median income for a family was $46,250. Males had a median income of $28,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $12,854.
